Basil Seed Research using - University Of Florida

Protocol & Applications Rates:

April 16th

Two varieties of basil seeds (Genovese: susceptible cultivar) & (Nufar: resistant cultivar) were planted in a peat medium. PGA Plus was applied as a soil drench to half of the seeds of each basil cultivar at a rate of 1 lb. / 100 gallons of water. Controls received only water.

June 5th

Seedlings were transplanted into the fieldand drenched again at the same rate. The soil was a sandy loam containing 2.8 % organic matter. Throughout the crop cycle PGA Plus was reapplied at 2 week intervals. Transplants were fertilized at planting and weekly with a water soluble fertilizer (20 - 10 - 20) at a rate which furnished the plants 200 ppm N. A randomized complete block design with four replications was used.

Plants were monitored weekly for symptoms of Fusarium wilt and symptomatic plants were assayed for Fusarium (predominantly Fusarium oxysporum) and other fungal species using a fusarium - selective medium (Komada's medium). Data was analyzed using Fisher's Protected LSD.

Interpretation of Test Results - Basil treated with Organica's Plant Growth Activator Plus showed a drastic decrease in the incidence of Fusarium wilt (93 % in Genovese) and a significant increase in yield (29.4 % in Genovese).

Both the susceptible and resistant varieties benefited from applications of Plant Growth Activator Plus. Furthermore PGA PLUS reduced root discoloration and the incidence of foliar bacterial blight (Xanthamanas sp.)
